National Pride and the Val D’Elsa region, following article talks about Newton and the road ahead:
Transformers, a fundamental node, with his entrepreneurial example of environmental and social awareness, engineer Guglielmo Montagnani takes stock of a particular sector concerning the distribution of electrical energy and the current outlook on the subject Giving more and more reliable energy distribution is one of the greatest needs of our society. The progress and development not only of our economy but of the very wellbeing of our communities passes through this node, just as electricity passes through transformers that enable its distribution. And so it is that of transformers that we speak with engineer Guglielmo Montagnani, founder and head of Newton Trasformatori Spa, a company based in Poggibonsi (Si) and with decades of experience in such a crucial sector. ‘Newton has the availability and capacity to support the growth in demand for electricity, a capacity that is also fundamental in the security of the distribution itself,’ says Montagnani. Currently, the company covers an area of 20,000 square metres and employs around 120 people internally. Recently, we have increased the production of transformers, especially high-voltage and high-power transformers, thanks to a huge investment we decided on last year. As a direct consequence, a few months ago we signed a contract with Italian Railways of EUR 180 million, a collaboration that will last six years and will start next years.
To better understand the size and importance of Newton’s work on mega transformers, it is necessary to briefly outline the context. “Our mega transformers exceed 60 megawatts, so we are talking about objects that require a very high level of expertise and that serve to transform and make useful energy. To understand this, you have to consider that the entire electricity grid in the world is high voltage, then there is the medium voltage that runs through population centres and, finally, the low voltage, that of the light bulb, to understand. The high voltage, therefore, concerns what Newton Trasformatori Spa is based in Poggibonsi (Siena) we could define as the main transport: at the town of Poggibonsi, for example, the voltage arrives at 132 thousand volts, at the beginning of the town an initial reduction is made that brings it down to 15 thousand or 20 thousand volts. Large transformers are used to make this first reduction. The medium voltage travels into the villages and goes into the distribution transformers, which then make a second reduction and bring the voltage up to 220 or 400 volts. With the mega transformers, we are in the final, most recent act in Newton’s story. But to get this far has taken more than forty years of experience, innovation and investment, which have taken the company to the highest possible level of expertise. ‘Newton is 43 years old this year,’ Montagnani recalls.
Infact, Newton was founded in 1982 and, thanks to the collaboration of a highly specialised team, the seriousness and attention paid to the customer, and the use of A NEW HIGH FREQUENCY OPPORTUNITY After 10 years of continuous experimentation on various fronts, Newton SST (Solid State Transformer) was born, a company complementary to the parent company Newton Trasformatori, which deals with high-frequency transformers. ‘Electric vehicles, data centres and renewable energies are the current trends on which a big change is taking place,’ says engineer Antonio Bertini, head of Newton Sst. “In all these cases we are talking about direct current, which therefore needs new solutions to distribute electricity. Here is a new market opportunity. Newton has thus added high-frequency transformers to its production of traditional transformers. This is how the new company was born, with significant initial investments, and which is now also working on amorphous materials and ferro-magnetic nanocrystals with exceptional characteristics that enable new performances. And a future of innovation that will continue for a long time to come’. Thanks to advanced design methods and punctuality in meeting commitments, has grown from a small artisan company to a major industrial enterprise, assuming the role of a key player in the national and international market. I believe that one of the reasons that has allowed us to achieve this goal lies in the company philosophy that has always animated us: we have always set ourselves achievable goals and, once achieved, we have never stopped, setting ourselves other equally achievable goals but raising the bar even higher. Always moving forward, always growing’. Over 40 years, therefore, dedicated to the design and production of “efficient transformers,” continues the Sienese entrepreneur, ‘designed to improve the quality of life and reduce energy consumption, promoting sustainable development. Our vision is a healthy, clean and comfortable World, to be left to future generations without distinction. Since 1982, we have pursued fundamental values such as fairness, intellectual honesty, understanding of customer needs, technical competence, quality at every stage of operation, and compliance with regulations and contractual terms. We are oriented towards the constant search for innovative technological solutions with a focus on the environment, guaranteeing flexibility, an excellent quality/price ratio and fast response times’. Also, the relationship with its territory. “For us it is absolutely central. That is why we take charge of several initiatives involving hundreds of people in the Casole d’Elsa area, the entrepreneur’s homeland. In particular, we have created five football teams, including a football school and the women’s team, as well as the men’s and youth categories. And it is the women’s football team that is giving us the greatest satisfaction and that bears witness to our commitment and the opportunities that our social action offers: we even got to play against Genoa and Torino. For a team came from a small village with less than a thousand inhabitants, this is, it goes without saying, a historic achievement’.
