Management of CO2 emissions
At a European and global level, it is required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and preserve environmental resources, emphasizing a concept of Sustainability and Circular Economy.
NEWTON’s response to this request was to begin a process based on the Life Cycle Assessment of the transformers produced – Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a tool for quantifying the environmental impact of a product throughout all phases of its entire life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials, through production, transport, the use phase, up to disposal.
In light of the results that emerged, NEWTON’s attention was therefore focused on the adoption of possible new technologies and/or on the exploitation of raw materials which also include the use of alternative materials, with reduced environmental impact or deriving from recycling chains .
The ongoing project is also aimed at obtaining accredited Carbon Footprint (CFP) and EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certifications for the transformers produced, further testimony to our commitment to environmental sustainability.
Below is a copy of the certifications obtained to date:
Reduction of CO2 emissions
An example of the commitment that NEWTON is carrying out concerns the case of the 400 kVA 20/0.420 kV transformer, ECO OL A0-10AK (serial number ENEL 110082).
The process, which began in 2020, allowed us first of all to obtain the EPD certification, issued by the certification body SGS Italia S.p.a, quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions generated from the cradle to gate of 1 transformer, equal to 7,214 kgCO2eq.
The EPD was registered with the no. 427 and is published by EPDItaly on the website www.epditaly.it.
Subsequently, through the use of raw materials produced with cutting-edge systems and containing recycled materials, as well as using energy produced by the proprietary photovoltaic system, it will be possible to obtain a significant reduction in emissions relating to the 400 kVA 20/0.420 kV transformer (SUPER GREEN), estimating a carbon footprint of less than 4,125 kgCO2eq.
